What Is Luxury in Architecture?

When we talk about luxury in architecture, it is easy to think of exclusive materials, large spaces, or recognizable brands. However, in our studio we believe that luxury goes beyond that.

Our experience in Mallorca shows us that true luxury in architecture does not lie in visible appearances, but in the quality of the experience that a space offers to those who inhabit it: the climate, the light, the silence, the relationship with the outdoors, and the feeling that everything works as it should.

For us, luxury is not an image. It is the result of a well-conceived project.

Empieza antes de los materiales

Before choosing one material over another, the essentials must first be resolved: orientation, cross ventilation, solar protection, natural light, proportions, and thermal and acoustic comfort.

If this foundation is not properly addressed, nothing can compensate for it later. A house may look spectacular in images, but if it does not function well in everyday life, for us, it is not luxury. In the Mediterranean, this is especially important. The sun changes throughout the year, the breeze is a resource, and shade is essential. Designing with the climate, not against it, makes all the difference.

Proporción y calma

We are often asked whether a house is large or small, but we believe that size is relative, and what truly matters is proportion: how width, length, and height relate to one another; how light enters the space; and how the different areas connect.

A well-proportioned space, even if it is not particularly large, feels comfortable and natural. There are projects in which everything simply fits together. This is something you perceive the moment you walk in, and it is not a matter of budget, but of balance.

Detalles que cambian la experiencia

Luxury is also found in the functionality of everyday details: in an outdoor floor that does not become slippery, in a handrail that does not burn under the sun, in a door that does not slam, in well-designed storage, or in privacy that avoids unwanted views without the need to build unnecessary walls.

These are small decisions that, taken together, greatly improve the quality of everyday living. Sometimes a simple gesture, moving an opening, raising a level by a few centimeters, or integrating a bench at the entrance, can transform the way a home is experienced.

Vivir el exterior

In Mallorca, outdoor spaces are not an addition, they are part of the home.

A porch that can be used almost all year round. A sheltered outdoor shower. A corner from which to watch the sunset. A courtyard that captures the morning light. These elements do not depend on luxury understood as excess, but on a good understanding of the place.

What is not always visible also matters: the texture of materials, the acoustics, lighting that is easy to use, and the feeling of coolness in summer.

Entonces, ¿qué es el lujo?

For us, luxury is well-being.

It is a home that supports everyday life without complicating it. One that responds to the climate. One that is well proportioned and does not need explanations. When architecture is well resolved, luxury appears naturally.
